Zombies have never been so popular. From 28 Days Later to Shaun of the Dead, and more recently the Vampire Zombie hybrids in Guillermo del Toro's excellent new book The Strain the undead and nearly dead are enjoying a stunning cultural revival.
Next in line to take on the flesh-eating phenomenon is Charlie Higson, author of the excellent and successful Young Bond series, whose new book The Enemy is released by Puffin in September.
The pre-publicity describes a story that, in one sense, explores every child's dream: a world without adults - where presumably there is no bed time, ro restriction on use of the PlayStation3 and unlimited access to the sweet shop: "When the sickness came, every police officer, politician – every adult – fell ill. The lucky ones died. The others are crazed, confused and lying in wait. Only children under fourteen remain..."
There is, of course, a downside: "...and they’re fighting to survive. Because the adults who are alive are hungry... And the only thing left to eat is YOU."
It sounds like a great story, and I am looking forward to getting my hands on a review copy to read over the summer with my son Paddy. (Our review, click here).
The Enemy is published on September 3, and to whet the appetite there is a great trailer over at the official website.
